Hiroshima: The Lost Photos

Hey Gang -

I thought you would all find this article/story and the associated photos very interesting. . .since all of us are photography enthusiasts and many of us for, among other reasons, because of how photographs can and do preserve time and record our history. The story is amazing and the photos incredible.

Free Compact Flash or Secure Digital Cards

I've been looking to buy some faster SD cards for my camera and came across this great deal on Sandisk Extreme III 4GB Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards. I'm sure most of you have heard of the Sandisk Extreme III's and know what great memory cards they are, so I'm sure you'll agree that this is an unbelievable deal ( at free-after-rebate you can't beat that! ). So I suggest if you're in the market for some more memory for your camera, or just some faster memory ( like me ), you order some before they sell out, because a deal like this can't last long.

We had a great meeting on Tuesday

Thanks go out to all of you who attended the Scott County Shooters meet this past Tuesday evening, with a special thanks to Dewanna Marcum for the excellent tutorial on how to get plugged into our new Scott County Shooters Blog and how to use Flickr. If you haven't signed on as a member of the Shooters group, I encourage you to do so right away. It is an excellent tool for posting comments, questions, advertisements, share photography information, etc. The blog is a private group and the only way you can join is by invitation, so just in case you have lost yours, I will resend it to all of you after this post.

We discussed the agenda for 2009 and found that it was unanimous that we all want more group outings! There WILL be some group outings scheduled in the future. Also, if you have a specific day or event that you have in mind, please post the information along with your phone number on the blog so that we can come along too. Yes, bad weather is right around the corner, but
there are lots of photo ops that come with ice and snow so be ready to get out and shoot.

Another thing the Shooters want more of is educational workshops. If you know of any persons who would be willing to do a workshop for us in 2009, please let us know so that we can get them scheduled. Tamara is working on a couple of speakers and she will give us more details later.

No one was interested in monthly or annual competitions so that will be scratched but most everyone would like to see our group have community exhibits of some kind. So, if you know any local merchants who would be willing to allow us to exhibit our work, please bring it to our attention so we can get a date scheduled.

The Mission Statement authored and posted by Dewanna will stand. It is an excellent statement about the Shooters group and everyone at the last meeting agreed that is spoke for all of us.

Thank you Dewanna for all the work you've put into making this blog available to us; Good Job!

The next meeting is set for Tuesday, November 25Th at 6:30 PM at the Scott Co Library.
The subject to shoot is FALL/AUTUMN. Hope to see all of you there!

Next Shooters Meeting

Just a reminder that we will be meeting Tuesday, October 28Th at 6:30 pm at the Scott County Library. The topic to shoot for this month is SHOOTING DOWN and FAVORITE SHOTS.

Please bring 1 to 10 pictures in any format that can be downloaded into the computer and we will view them on the big screen in the Conference Room. You may also bring prints if you are not shooting digital or prefer to exhibit your photos in that format.

Please let me know if you are getting the updates from the Scott County Shooters Blog and whether or not you have had a chance to look at the club photos that are posted in Flickr. I am very interested to know if you like what you are seeing. Dewanna has put a lot of time and work into this format so that the club will be presented in a more professional manor. Personally, I am enjoying the ability to post some of my photos for everyone to see and comment on. I would love seeing some of you get on board and have some fun with me and Dewanna. I also like being able to vote on next year's theme to shoot. I'd like to see what ideas you have in addition to the list posted on the blog.

Next year we hope to make some minor changes in our monthly meetings. Put your thinking caps on and let me know what vision you have for the Shooters Club. Would you like to take a more active role and take on some responsibilities? Do you want to see more or less in the way of competition? Do you want to go out on some group shoots? Would you like to have special speakers? What are you looking for? These are the things that we need to know so that we can set up a new schedule for next year. This club should be a group effort, we need to work together to make it successful and beneficial to everyone. We are all busy and time is a precious commodity these days, lets make the most of it and be the best Shooters in Scott County!

Thanks, and have a great day!

Brenda

Top 10 Image Managers

I'm sure most of you are like me in that you have hundreds and even thousands of digital photos you've taken over the years. . .and, you are all probably like me in that there comes a point where your 'collection' can become unmanageable using just your default uploading software and, perhaps, dated folders. So, I thought that someone other than myself might benefit from my search for a solution. I found this article on the top ten image managers very interesting and thought I'd share it here. Just click the title to go to the article. Please let me know what you think. . .do you want me to keep posting stuff like this here?

A Talk About Style and Post Processing

I'm probably not unlike the rest of you and others that consider themselves photography enthusiasts in that I not only like to take photos, but I just like to look at them as well. There's more to it than just the joy of looking and experiencing someone else's unqiue perspective and gift though, it's also that in looking at the work of others, I analyze what I see - what I like and don't like and, in so doing, develop my own eye. . .and hopefully, eventually, my skill. . .further. I recently came across this website (click the title link to go there) of a photographer in Arkansas. I don't spotlight her here as the beacon of what we should all strive to become, but rather to spark a discussion on style and post processing in portrait photography. While some of her portraits are more simple or more 'realistic', overall this particular photographer strives for what I would call a very dramatic, artistic impact in her portrayals. I am not very experienced in post processing, especially with regard to portraits, so I wonder about the techniques she employs. It looks like she does skin softening, some heavy vingetting, some eye and mouth enhancements, and some tweaking on saturation for 'pop'. I'm just curious what you guys think of her style and, for those of you out there that are experienced in the realm of post processing, how you think she achieves this look.

Photo Essay - Chernobyl

I came across this a couple of years ago and found it very interesting. Thinking that many of you, my fellow shooters, may also find it interesting and enjoy this unique photo essay, I thought I'd post it here. I have since read that the author 'embellished' certain parts of the story, specifically those related to her father's position and the her 'special' access to the area, but feel this does not detract from the overall impact of the powerful essay. I hope you'll agree.

Boden Workshop and Flickr

Hey gang!

We had a great time with Ed at his studio! It was so awesome of him to invite us out, show us around, and teach us a thing or two! We had some great models and we had a great time. If you were in attendance and took some shots. . .and you know who you are. . .then please post them in our group pool on Flickr so we can all see your work!

I was just out on Flickr and am thrilled to find that I am no longer the Lone Ranger out there. . .thanks Brenda for sharing some of your great photos! So, now you've got more incentive to take a dip in the Flickr pool - there's new stuff to check out. . .and, while you're out there, why not take a few minutes to share some of your own stuff for all of us to enjoy. Come on, all the cool kids are doing it. . .you know you want to :)

Flickr Tutorial - Newbies Guide to Flickr

Hey Gang -

I'm feeling a little lonely with only my photos in our Flickr group pool and I'm hoping that maybe it's because some members aren't familiar with or comfortable using Flickr. Soooo, I thought I'd post a Flickr tutorial here for everyone. I was going to create one, but found that someone had already done it much better than I could, so I've included the link here - just click the title of this post. Enjoy!!!!!!

Community and Christmas

I wanted to float this idea out to the group to see how it is received. I thought that it would be nice if we, as a club, incorporated some kind of community support/involvement as part of our vision or charter. In this vein, I wanted to see if the group would have any interest in doing 'charity' or low-cost portrait sessions, primarily for underprivileged families, for the upcoming holidays. It isn't much, maybe, but I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to get some practice shooting, maybe under the guidance of our professional members (said while crossing my fingers hopefully), while at the same time giving something to our community and giving these families the opportunity to have family portraits done when they might not otherwise be able to budget for such a 'luxury' item. We might be able to work through one or more local churches to make this happen. Okay, gang, what do you think? Love it. . .hate it. . .think I've lost it??? Please comment on this post with your opinion.

Thanks,
Dewanna

Alec Soth Exhibit

From today's Herald Leader:

Photographer Alec Soth, whose insightful portraits and landscapes from the shores of the Mississippi River to the Paris fashion world and Bogota, Columbia, are on display at The Art Museum of the University of Kentucky through October 26, will speak at UK as part of the Robert C. May Photography Endowment Lecture series. The lecture, 4pm Friday at the UK Student Center Worsham Theater, is free. For more info, go to www.uky.edu/artmuseum.

Vision Statement

We're looking forward to our next meeting, which will be on October 28th. One of the things we'd like to talk about at that meeting is what we all want our club to be, so we are going to try to come up with a vision statement. Please put your thinking caps on and come prepared with some ideas to discuss. It doesn't have to be anything complicated or detailed, we are just trying to get some consensus and energy around who we are, who we want to be and where we want to go with this club. This club belongs to all of us, so we want everyone's input. We hope to see you. . .and hear you. . .at the next meeting.
